Project Solution
Since the SBHSD Board of Trustees approved Climatec, the partnership has grown into a multiphase program featuring LED lighting, HVAC modernizations and an upgraded building automation system campus-wide, added air conditioning in previously uncooled spaces, and ground-mounted, parking lot, and rooftop solar arrays. With the help of Climatec, SBHSD identified and leveraged State grant funds, Federal relief funding, and Clean Renewable Energy Bonds to combine to fund the program.
With modernizations totaling over $8.3 million, the program is projected to deliver over $19 million in cost savings to District budgets over its lifetime. The first solar arrays on campus went live in 2019, and through mid-2023 have generated over 7,152 MWh of power and saved San Benito High School District over $1.68 million. By late 2023, these savings will reach $1 million ahead of projections.
For SBHSD, the program spearheads a movement of sustainability throughout the Hollister community. As the District begins its journey to build a second high school, the knowledge and success of its current energy savings program will help shape the design of its future growth. This extends beyond facilities to its students, with sustainability curriculum offerings and an environmental club giving students the chance to share their input and shape the conversation.
Project Results
The District will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1,626 metric tons annually, which equates to 362 cars removed off the road, 182,917 gallons of gasoline saved, 26,879 trees preserved from deforestation and powering 316 Hollister homes.
